The G.M. Car Built for Speed
By the late 1930s, General Motors was in much the same position they held for the next 50 years dominant in almost every price category. Most of their reputation was based on price, quality and appearance. The Buick Century was the exception-it was built for speed. In fact, the Century Coupe was the dominant car in its class in the National Hot Rod Association for 25 years from 1937 to 1962. The secret to its speed was the light body (under 4000 pounds) and the powerful 320.2 cubic inch 141 hp. Inline 8 Dynaflash engine.

The auto industry had one of its worst years ever in 1938 as the fragile US economy hit a sharp recession. Sales were down 40%. Nevertheless, Buick had its highest ranking since 1931, coming in 4th place, even beating GM affiliate Pontiac.

The Century Convertible Coupe cost $1359 with only 462 produced as soft-tops were losing their appeal.

This ultra sweet classic is powered by a 1997 Cadillac 32 valve V-8 with 300 horse.  Northstar engine.

The transmission is a 700R four speed automatic.

The suspension, both front and rear are  C-4 corvette as is the power steering and steering assembly and the power assisted four-wheel disc brakes. Carrea coil overs were added for better handling and ride.

The dash cluster is original, however Dakota Digital provided a digital instrumentation concept.

Creature comforts include power two speed wipers, corvette tilt steering column, Pontiac Grand AM power- reclining seats for both the driver and passenger, Vintage Air heating/cooling system, Power door locks, power windows, C-4 corvette cruise control, and a hide-away JVC AM/FM/CD stereo with four Infinity speakers. The billet banjo steering wheel is wrapped with “spice” leather, as are the seats, the rear interior and the rumble seat. The trunk is done in “spice” leather and saddle tan wool carpet as is the kick panels and the floorboards.

Ride and comfort are important to this duel side mount rare automobile and thus is fitted with Mc Lean 15X7 wire wheels. The front tires are 215 X 15 B.F. Goodrich black walls and the rear suspension rides on 235 X15 B.F.G. black walls.

The paint is a special custom Red base coat/clear coat mix by P.P.G.

The soft top is of black Mercedes cloth.
